The Cinelli Nemo Tig Disc: A Modern Steel Frame

If you are a purist steel-is-real type, then seeing disc brakes on a steel frame may seem an anathema, while a carbon-bred weekend warrior might wonder why anyone would even bother with steel these days. The Cinelli Nemo Tig Disc is here to answer both types of naysayers with the amazingly lightweight responsive ride that includes the level of road comfort that only steel can provide.

Using the Columbus Spirit triple-butted tubes, they have mixed some classic Cinelli steel shapes – the seatstays are the identical shape that you’d find on the 1981 Cinelli Laser – with some much more modern features like the 44mm oversized downtube, the conical CNC’d head tube, and the Futura Disc monocoque carbon fork. Adding disc brakes to the setup gives it an unmistakable modern look, as does the oversized down tube. This is not your grandfather’s steel frame. It even takes a closer inspection to determine that it’s not even carbon. Now, some steel fans might not think that is a point in its favor, but once you ride it, you’ll be convinced that not only does it combine all the best of steel, it adds an unmistakable modern responsiveness especially climbing out of the saddle.

They hand make the steel frames in the Cinelli factory and are able to pull the tubes to a ridiculously thin sidewalls thanks to the amazing properties of Columbus steel and expertise of the Cinelli crafts people. Since they have been able to make the tubes so thin yet durable, the Nemo Tig Disc has a weight much closer to a modern carbon frame. That doesn’t mean that it loses the classic feel of a steel road bike. As the disc brake version, it can be kitted out with a great selection of the most modern components and can accommodate up to 28mm tires, so you can even consider taking in a little gravel or farm tracks with this. The 68mm BSA bottom bracket comes standard, though they do offer a custom order for a Press Fit 86.5 bottom bracket if that’s what you’d prefer.
