Argon 18 Krypton Pro All Road: The Ultimate Versatile All-Road Bike
With the help of distinguished cyclists like round-the-world record holder Mark Beaumont, the designers at Argon 18 have revamped their popular Krypton line to become one of the most versatile all-road bikes on the market. With the Argon 18 Krypton Pro All Road, the joys of a light, fast gravel bike and comfortable, responsive road bike can be found in the same premium package.
The All-Road category for bikes is nothing new, but an increasing number of manufacturers are taking a much closer look at how to enhance their endurance frames to be less sluggish and more capable. The Argon 18 Krypton Pro All Road is a prime example of a brand taking what was already a pretty awesome frame and turning it into something that could conceivably be considered the perfect option for anyone who just wants to have one bike for all rides.
With that in mind, Argon 18 has focused on making the Krypton Pro All Road exceptionally comfortable. They didn’t have to change anything about the geometry from the earlier iterations since they were still very happy with how the rider/bike interface worked. But they did make some pretty impressive changes to how the bike interacts with the road. They wanted it to be able to handle everything from smooth tarmac to rough cobbles to challenging gravel paths.
And for that to happen, the first place you naturally look is tire clearance. The Krypton Pro All Road can now handle up to 40mm tires, depending on your set-up. So if you are running a 1x groupset, you can fit 40mm as measured on the bike. There are limits to tire size if you run the frame with fenders (35mm) and if you are using Shimano Di2, the tire limit is also 35mm. It goes up to 38mm with SRAM AXS. In any case, those are all pretty impressive numbers for tire width, especially when you consider how they have managed to keep the chainstays short at 415mm to enhance the snappiness of the handling. And they have also succeeded in getting these tire sizes in the smallest frame size, which is remarkably XXS.
Premium Carbon Layup of the Krypton Pro All Road bike frame
Since this is a bike that has had a lot of input from ultra endurance athlete Mark Beaumont, it’s no surprise that it has focused a lot on comfort as well as versatility. Using their Topological Compliance System, the Krypton Pro All Road frame finds the optimal balance of comfort and performance to ensure even the longest rides are enjoyable. The carbon layup is of the highest quality as well, to keep the frame rigid and responsive when accelerating or cornering, while absorbing all the road chatter that will result when you head for those rougher routes. The frame also offers fender and rack mounts as well as bosses for a third water bottle under the down tube. A nifty down tube storage chamber also provides a place to stash tools necessary for extended days on the road.
To make getting your perfect set-up even easier, Argon 18 designers apply their 3D headset with cable integration for easy maintenance and dialed-in fit options. It allows you to adjust the front end stack according to your needs – 0mm if you rather like a steeper drop to the bars, 15mm if you like to stay fairly low but want to give your back a break, and 30mm if you really do like the added comfort a higher stack can offer you. But since it is all designed to work with the frame, even the highest stack setting will not compromise the rigidity or handling, in the way spacers might.
Available in six sizes, the Argon 18 Krypton Pro All Road will go a long way towards being the ideal bike for anyone looking for the challenge offered by the empty road.
