The Ibis Oso Mountain e-Bike Frame: Elevating Downhill Mountain Biking with E-Power
We’re big proponents of e-bikes of every type. But there is no discipline where they make more sense and can transform the experience than with downhill mountain bikes. The Ibis Oso enters the Ibis line-up as the ultimate DH e-bike, making the ride up the mountain just as much fun as the ride down.
For the Oso, the magic happens when the Ibis designers combine their DH-specific rig with a Bosche Performance Line CX motor and Bosch Powertube Battery with 750Wh. Bosche offers an ideal solution for a serious DH mountain machine since its mid-engine positioning ensures stability. The Performance Line CX provides torque of up to 85 Nm, which results in a powerful acceleration to clamber up even the steepest, most technical inclines
Natural Pedaling Feel in the Ibis Oso: Optimal Support and Control on Challenging Inclines
And if you are afraid of suffering from an unnatural motorbike feel, there’s no need. The Performance Line CX motor offers optimal support while still allowing the pedal action to feel natural and familiar. No jerky accelerations or unexpected kickbacks. The system uses a multi-sensor concept that senses the terrain and your needs to respond accordingly. Uphill pedaling always feels totally in control allowing you to concentrate on taking the best lines to get up the course.
The frame design to accommodate the Bosche system is unique among Ibis offerings since it takes the rear triangle and narrows it to the point that it can hardly claim to be a triangle. The two sets of stays seem to meet at the axle point and narrowly diverge only once they reach the pivot points at the bottom bracket. It’s an unusual design that enhances the stiffness and gives the 145mm rear suspension full range. Combined with the Fox Float X2 Performance Series shock and the Fox Float 38 fork with 170mm travel, the Oso is an e-bike ready to take some big hits and still keep you shredding on course.
Interestingly, Ibis has chosen to offer two different wheel size combos depending on frame size. So Small and Medium frames will have a mixed wheel set-up, with a 29-inch in the front and 27.5-inch in the rear. This staggered set-up will give smaller riders the same traction and roll-over performance up front, but with the agility versatility of the 27.5 in the rear. However, for larger riders who have a Large and X-Large frame, those bikes have been spec’d with 29-inch front and rear. Since the idea is to get the same performance level no matter the size of the rider, Ibis has tweaked the geometry to work with the two wheel standards. So for the S and M sizes, the seat tube angle is 77° while it increases to 78° for L and 79° for XL. The head tube angle remains 64° across the board.
The Ibis Oso downhill e-mountain bike with a Bosche motor and durable carbon frame can help you transform your DH riding to go from uphill grind to feeling like it’s downhill everywhere.
