Description
Pinarello X5 - A Mid-Range Entry in the Endurance X Series
With the fleshing out of the Pinarello endurance-oriented X series, the Pinarello X5 slips neatly into the mid-range category with a comfort focused carbon layup and a value for money spec including Shimano 105 Di2 groupset.
To introduce not only an extra level of cost consciousness but also an additional amount of vertical compliance, the X5 uses the exceptional Toray T700 UD carbon fiber. The carbon layup focuses on enhancing the responsiveness of the ride while incorporating a noticeable amount of vertical compliancy. You won’t be rattled to death on rough roads with the X5. Sticking with the much lauded asymmetric frame design, the X5 nevertheless allows for exceptional power transfer thanks to the special asymmetric layup the drivetrain side receives on the seat and chain stays.
In appearance, the X5 is indistinguishable from the X9 and X7 thanks to the special X seatstays. Similarly to those two more expensive X series models, the X5 still uses the X stay design for compliance, but the central part of the bridge as seen on the Dogma X is removed to incorporate an additional level of rear end compliance. It’s a striking design that provides a perfect balance of rigidity and compliance.
Another noteworthy nod towards comfort is that the X5 can accommodate up to 35 mm tires. And that means comfortably accommodate with lots of room to spare. Pinarello was careful to say, though, that they didn’t want to go too much wider than 35 mm because this is after all still a road bike for serious endurance-oriented riders. They are not categorizing it as an all road and certainly not a gravel bike, though with that level of tire clearance, you would be safe taking it over hard pack gravel and rougher paved roads.
X5’s Sizing & Geometry Tailored for Normal Riders
The Pinarello X5 comes in 9 sizes compared to 11 sizes for the Dogma X. But that is still an impressive number of sizes for a carbon frame, when most companies maybe have 6 sizes at most with an uninspired small, medium and large nomenclature. Since the number of sizes have been reduced, it’s a little hard to make a direct comparison between the Dogma X and the rest of the frames in the X series, but in general the non-Dogma X series frames have a slightly more relaxed geometry compared to the Dogma X, which of course is even more relaxed than the pure-racing Dogma F geometry. Again, the intention is to make bikes in the X-series the best possible all-around road frame for us normal folk.
Weighing around 990 grams in the mid-sizes, the Pinarello X5 offers exceptional handling and durability at a friendly price point. You’ll love how it accelerates like a superbike, and absorbs road chatter like an all-road.
