Niner Introduces the 27.5 Inch Niner RIP 9 RDO
Don’t worry. This new 27.5 inch design for the Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5 is not the RIP signal for 29ers at Niner. Far from it. Even though the folks at Niner are still committed to creating the best 29ers, they want to make sure they are answering the needs of their customers as well. They had enough people appeal to them to make a Niner 27.5 inch machine that they decided to break their own rule.
The thing is, it totally makes sense. Some people just love the advantages of a 29 inch setup and can ignore the drawbacks such as greater rotational weight and reduced standover height, while other people really are forced to overcompensate for these big-wheel characteristics. There is no right or wrong answer here. It all depends on what an individual rider needs. And so it’s fantastic that Niner now offers this 27.5 option that has been specifically designed to work with this wheel standard. This is a ground up redesign of the chassis. So the front and rear triangle have received special attention to ensure that the entire system is calibrated perfectly: wheel size, CVA suspension travel, geometry.
By focusing everything from the geometry to the suspension with a view to how it will interact with the 27.5 inch wheels means that this RIP 9 RDO 27.5 not only offers great balance but amazing verve for shredding. Part of that is down to the longer, lower and slacker geometry that Niner is using here. It succeeds in finding that right balance between being enjoyable to climb with, but super fun to fly with. The harder you push it, the more it will seem to give. The 150mm suspension fork upfront pairs with 140mm shock in the back to work with the aggressive geometry in a way that will make you feel like a seriously good bike handler on the roughest rock gardens.
Unique Features of the CVA System used in the RIP 9 RDO 27.5
You’ll notice that this CVA system is a little different compared to previous iterations. For one thing, there are ribs on either side of the damper. The wisdom of the design here is to eliminate the seatstay bridge, which opens up the possibilities of how big you can go with your tire selection. Similarly, the lower link of the CVA system tucks neatly under the bottom bracket shell to shorten the chainstays and help keep that tire clearance generous. Niner has also included a rocker-mounted flip chip so that you have the option to lower the bottom bracket by seven millimeters and slacken the head tube from 66° to 65°.
It won’t come as a surprise to hear that Niner have taken the same amount of care with the quality of their carbon fiber as usual, which means that the Niner RIP 9 RDO 27.5 is light, durable, stiff when you accelerate and compliant when your rolling through rough stuff. Whether you are pedaling up some challenging inclines or raging down a tight course, the RIP 9 RDO 27.5 will guarantee the type of performance that will keep the confidence levels high and the speed higher.
