The LOOK E-765 Optimum: A Perfect Blend of Performance and Electric Assistance

Even if the engineers at LOOK have used the non-electric 765 Optimum Disc as the baseline for the design, the fact that this is an e-bike meant that they had almost to go back to the drawing board in terms of carbon used and how it’s layered. That’s because the forces and weight exerted on the frame will be much different for an e-bike compared to a non-e-bike.

Luckily LOOK knows carbon, and have the expertise to do exactly what they need in their own factory. By being super precise in how they orient the carbon fibers, and carefully choosing which types of carbon to use, they have been able to make the E-765 Optimum ride with the same sharp responsiveness and vibration absorbing compliance to make it almost indistinguishable from a non-electric LOOK road bike.

For the pedal assist system, LOOK have turned to the German brand Fazua, a company making highly advanced batteries and motors for high end bikes. Fazua’s method is to provide power at the bottom bracket directly into the pedals. The system ensures a smooth pedal stroke with a very natural feel, almost like an eternal tail wind. With the total package weighing just 4.6kg, the Fazua system provides 55nM of torque up to 400 Watts. There are three levels that you can easily toggle through using the handy handlebar remote: 125 Watts, 250 Watts and 400 Watts up to 20mph. LOOK suggest an average range with mixed Watt usage is 86km or just over 50 miles.

The down tube drive pack is easily removable for recharging. You can even leave it at home and ride it like a non-electric bike. Keeping the overall frame weight down to just over 13kg, including the battery and motor means that the E-765 Optimum is only marginally heavier than a typical endurance road bike, but with the added kick that the pedal assistance offers. That’s why it was so important to them to ensure that it rides as well as the non-electric version.

They wanted none of the road riding experience to be dampened. So they have used similar designs for the 3D WAVE technology in the seatstays, which dampens road vibrations up to 20% more effectively than standard seatstay designs, without losing any of the frame’s lateral efficiency. They’ve also employed the Direct Drive integrated stem design to make the cockpit rigid and efficient.
