Pinarello Dogma F Disc bike - improved model of the already great bicycle
Anyone who pays attention to pro cycling is probably aware that the Ineos Grenadiers team (formerly team Sky) has long been sponsored by Pinarello. And as of writing this, they are the only team in the men’s pro peloton who has not moved over to racing on disc brakes. However, with the release of the Pinarello Dogma F Disc, that may very well change.
As the latest and greatest of the Pinarello creations, the Dogma F Disc manages to find some more marginal gains over the already spectacular Dogma F12. Perhaps the improvement that will get the most headlines is how much weight the Dogma F managed to lose compared to the Dogma 12 Disc. By focusing on the seatpost, handlebars, and fork, as well as the frame itself, they were able to make the frame system 9% lighter than the F12 Disc. They focused on even the smallest details, like the 3D-printed titanium seat clamp which offers a very slick solution as well as weight savings, as does the improved seatpost design that makes it lighter and more aero. The cockpit has been given a new carbon layup using the latest high quality carbon fiber that offers a 13% weight reduction over the old Ultra Talon without compromising on safety or rigidity.
Overall, the Pinarello Dogma F Disc saves upwards of 265 grams compared to the DOGMA F12 Disc, while also being 12% stiffer around the bottom bracket. But the point isn’t the weight, it’s the fact that it weighs so little without compromising the exceptional aerodynamics, handling, or ride quality. In fact, the Dogma F Disc has a lower drag than the Dogma F rim brake frame, which is the first time Pinarello have managed that. A lot of the disc brake aero advantage comes with the development of the new fork for the Dogma F. The fork profile and cross sections improve how the fork legs and front wheel work together, aerodynamically speaking, in order to smooth the air over the leading edge of the bike.
Relying again on the Carbon Torayca T1100 1K Dream Carbon with Nanoalloy Technology for the tubing, Pinarello have sculpted the tubes for the Dogma F slightly differently in a bid to save weight. The seat tube and seat post are narrower, which actually is possible thanks to the UCI changing the rules for 2021 which allowed for the minimum tube width to be reduced. The down tube cross section has been shaved to improve aerodynamics while the seatstays also have a new cross section that, similar to the new fork shape, works in conjunction with the rear wheel to reduce drag.
They have updated the geometry table compared to the F12. Instead of 13 sizes, the Dogma F will be available in 11 sizes, which is still a huge number of sizes for a monocoque carbon frame of this quality. Most frame manufacturers invest in maybe five or six mold sizes. Whereas the Pinarello Dogma F comes not only in 11 frame sizes, but also the Most Talon handlebar (not included in the price) comes in 16 sizes to accommodate bar width and stem length combinations as well as two seatpost options with either 20mm offset or zero offset. So whether you are just over 5 feet tall (157cm) like Tom Pidcock or 6 foot 4 (193cm) like Filippo Ganna on the Ineos team, you will certainly be able to find a Pinarello Dogma F to fit you. The Dogma F Disc frame is compatible only with electric groupsets and weighs 865 grams unpainted in a size 53.
Pinarello Dogma F Disc bike frame - amazing aerodynamics and handling
Pinarello is the first to acknowledge that there is inevitably a price/quality ratio. They have designed the Pinarello Dogma F Disc to be the most aero and lightweight racing bike that offers the best handling characteristics. Striving for perfection comes at a cost, but once you have the chance to ride your Dogma F Disc down a long descent after hammering up a climb, you will understand that it’s worth every cent.
