Description
Pinarello Nytro E9 Electric Road Bike with Powerful TQ-HPR50 Motor
With the growth in popularity of electric bikes, Pinarello took a close look at their fleet and decided to do quite a significant update on the popular Nytro e-road bike. The Pinarello Nytro E9 electric road bike has a lightweight, efficient TQ-HPR50 motor provided by the German-based TQ company. Combining that with high quality carbon fiber frame and the exceptional Pinarello handling makes this the ultimate e-bike for cyclists who enjoy the feel of a fast bike with a sustained tailwind.
If you have had a look at the size of the Dogma F bottom bracket, it probably has occurred to you that a motor could fit there. That thought must have crossed the Pinarello engineers’ minds since they have taken a lot of inspiration from the Dogma F when designing the Nytro E9. For the carbon, they have chosen the Toray T900, which is the same carbon they are using on the Pinarello F9 non-electric road bike. It works well for this application thanks to its high tensile strength, ensuring the frame can withstand both your normal pedal power plus the amplified power provided by the motor. This grade of carbon also offers a great deal of vertical compliance to reduce vibration and rider fatigue on longer outings.
For the carbon layup, Pinarello unsurprisingly turns to their asymmetric way of building up the carbon, giving the drivetrain side a more robust layup to be able to balance out the pedaling forces compared to the non-drivetrain side. Starting with the seatstays and chainstays, the drivetrain and non-drivetrain sides have two different shapes to accommodate the different forces each will experience. Perhaps most complex is the down tube which not only incorporates asymmetry in the design, but also houses the battery, which is completely integrated inside the frame.
If you have considered a Pinarello e-bike in the past, you’ll remember that the Dyodo used an ebikemotion hub-based motor and then the first generation Nytros used the mid-drive system from Fazua. Both are generally excellent systems, but for the Nytro E9 electric road bike, Pinarello have moved to the TQ-HPR50 motor system, which is not only super light at 3.9kg, but super quiet as well. It’s a mid-drive system with a small motor in the bottom bracket region with a design that provides an exceptionally natural feel, not only because it is so quiet, but also because it engages and disengages super rapidly. There’s not the usual lag followed by a kick of power. Simply begin to pedal and the system engages at the level you’ve set it, and as soon as you stop pedaling, the motor will also stop and allow you to coast naturally.
It can feel so natural since the TQ-HPR50 system includes sensors measuring the leg input on each side of the motor. This little innovation must have sounded like music to the Pinarello engineers who have long been committed to asymmetric designs. The TQ-HPR50 motor delivers up to 50 Nm of torque and 300 Watts of peak power. It uses a 360Wh battery and offers a fully integrated 2” display on the top tube. The TQ app allows you to customize what is shown on the display as well as the power output for each of the three levels of power.
With a 32mm max tire clearance, the Nytro E9 can offer a comfortable ride for hours on end. The battery life of the TQ-HPR50 system generally depends on how much power you are using, how much climbing you are doing, and even the temperature you are riding in. But you can buy a range extender that can be placed in the seat tube bottle cage and be plugged into the frame using the same port where you’ll recharge the battery.
Versatile Groupset Compatibility in the Nytro E9
Using internal cable routing and the Think 2 design, the Nytro E9 can fit electronic groupsets or mechanical groupsets from Shimano and SRAM. Available in six sizes, it offers a sporty geometry perfect for road-oriented riders. Weighing just 11.4kg, the Pinarello Nytro E9 kitted out with Shimano Dura Ace Di2 and Princeton Carbonworks GRIT 4540 wheelset enhances the joy of every ride without removing the classic Pinarello ride feel.
