Pinarello X9 - Making High-Quality Endurance Bikes Accessible
With the X-series, Pinarello has committed to making high quality, endurance-oriented bikes more accessible to a wider number of people. By taking a leaf out of the Dogma X book, the Pinarello X9 comes with a comfort-focused carbon layup and a unique rear triangle design to ensure the ultimate in comfort over long distances while still feeling as sharp and snappy as a classic Pinarello.
The X9 sits just below the Dogma X in terms of elite quality. Using Toray T900 carbon fiber for the layup introduces an extra degree of vertical compliance to the X9 frame, which goes hand in glove with this bike’s intended focus on long distance comfort for those of us with less than WorldTour flexibility. It differs from the Dogma X too in the shape of the special X seatstays. It still uses the X stay design for compliance, but the central part of the bridge that is used in the Dogma X is removed for the X9 to incorporate an additional level of rear end compliance.
The Pinarello X9 comes in 9 sizes compared to 11 sizes for the Dogma X. But that is still an impressive number of sizes for a carbon frame, when most companies maybe have 6 sizes at most with an nonspecific small, medium and large nomenclature. Since the number of sizes have been reduced, it’s a little hard to make a direct comparison between the Dogma X and the rest of the frames in the X series, but in general the non-Dogma X series frames have a slightly more relaxed geometry compared to the Dogma X, which of course is even more relaxed than the pure-racing Dogma F geometry. Again, the intention is to make the X9 the best possible all-around road frame for us normal folk.
Accommodating 35mm Tires for the X9’s Versatility
Another noteworthy nod towards comfort is that the X9 can accommodate up to 35 mm tires. And that means comfortably accommodating with lots of room to spare. Pinarello was careful to say, though, that they didn’t want to go too much wider than 35 mm because this is after all still a road bike for serious endurance-oriented riders. They are not categorizing it as an all road and certainly not a gravel bike, though with that level of tire clearance, you would be safe taking it over hard pack gravel and rougher paved roads.
If you read some reviews of Pinarello bikes, you might get the idea that the Italian company has never done anything but elite, exclusive racing frames. But that would be giving you a false impression of the brand that has worked harder than maybe any other high end bike brand to make frames that fit all types of riders. From making sure that the smallest to the tallest possible rider is catered to, to having an endurance, comfort-oriented frame always in the lineup (whatever its name), Pinarello is a bike brand that is passionate about making sure they have the perfect bike to help you love absolutely every ride you do.
And the Pinarello X9 is simply another in a long line of bikes that they hope will help elevate your rides. Available with the top spec of Shimano Dura Ace Di2, the frame weighs about 960 grams in a size 53, which will ensure it is as light and responsive as it is comfortable over the long haul.
