Wilier Jena Hybrid e-Gravel Adventure Bike: Unlocking New Frontiers
Whether you are a beginner or are seriously fit racing every weekend, adding the Wilier Jena Hybrid e-gravel adventure bike to your collection will help you discover new things about your environment and yourself.
The Jena Hybrid is made from a carbon monocoque frame and fork with a geometry that is similar to the non-electric Jena. That means that the position will be more oriented towards a comfortable setup, with the option of getting aggressive if you want to. Wilier understands that the Jena Hybrid is the type of bike that will encourage you to extend your trip while taking time to admire the scenery and wants to promote that with a more relaxed stance. It doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to get into a tuck and attack a descent if you want to. It just means that you’ll feel comfortable even on those multi-hour treks and you'll be even more open to adventure with the addition of the eBikemotion pedal assist system.
As for the pedal assist system, eBikemotion has been one of the more popular options for road and gravel bike manufacturers largely because it is so light and can integrate seamlessly into the aesthetics of a regular road bike. And that is all true with the Jena Hybrid. But Wilier have gone one step further by using the help of the OEM Mahle eBikemotion company to customize the Jena Hybrid. As with all eBikemotion-equipped bikes, they are using the rear hub 40 Nm motor to assist pedalling. Going with the hub motor meant that Wilier could improve the shape of the bottom bracket to give it not only the look but the performance of a normal road bike. The hulking down tube and bottom bracket region is usually what gives away the e-ness of a bike, but here, the slim appearance and the narrow Q Factor offered by the BB means that it is identical to the non-electric Jena.
iWoc System on the Handlebar of the Jena Hybrid
One of the handiest improvements that results from this Mahle influence is the fact they have mounted the iWoc control system on the handlebar instead of the top tube. This means that you can choose your level of assistance or check your battery level without having to remove your hands from the bars or even more importantly, without having to stare awkwardly at your top tube. That will be a big help and even a safety feature especially when you are riding off-road and don’t want to take your hands off the bars. You can easily control the 250 Watts on offer by the motor and the various levels of assist you require based on what the terrain demands from moment to moment.
And when you see the exceptional tire clearance the Jena Hybrid offers, you’ll be seriously anxious to find those quiet unpaved roads as fast as possible. You can use either 700c or 650b wheels, and can fit up to 44mm wide tires on the 700c or 48mm wide on the 650b. That’s serious rubber by anyone’s standards. There are also seemingly endless options of various mudguard, bag mounts, and bottle holders to provide the optimum performance for ambitious bikepackers. They’ve even designed an additional battery pack option that can neatly be attached to the rivets on the seat tube.
Weighing just an extra 3.5kg, the eBikemotion pedal assist system helps the Jena Hybrid unlock all sorts of doors for exploration. Once you start riding the Wilier Jena Hybrid, you’ll never feel under-powered again.
