Princeton CarbonWorks Mach 7580: Rim Brake Speed Marvels
Though we recognize the benefits that disc brakes have brought to road racing, we're still pleased to see some companies are offering their best wheelsets in rim brake versions as well. The Princeton CarbonWorks Mach 7580 for rim brakes have already been ridden to world championship victories and are ready to help you push your competitors to the limit.
Founded by a cluster of aerodynamic experts at Princeton University, Princeton CarbonWorks is an interesting addition to the crowded racing wheels market. They unashamedly introduced wheels intended to knock Lightweight off its perch and have had some visible success with that, considering Ineos have been using PCW wheels on special days recently, instead of the excellent Obermayers that had been their go-to climbing wheels. Now with the Princeton CarbonWorks Mach 7580, PCW are moving into the time trial and triathlon market with a huge splash.
Using the now familiar undulating rim shape, the Mach 7580 wheelset offers a deep, but not too deep, profile that varies between 75 and 80mm with an average depth of 77.5mm. It's not the deepest profile on the market, but it's still wickedly fast. Sometimes there is a disconnect between what races the components win and what benefit normal riders like us can expect to enjoy. But it's hard to deny that riders both small and large have all ridden to extremely good results on these wheels over vastly different courses, even in the few first weeks that the wheels were available.
Part of the success might be due to the types of riders that were racing with the PCW Mach 7580 Filippo Ganna, Amber Neben, Rohan Dennis but much of the credit must also go to the equipment. With the Mach 7580, PCW have made them deeper and faster without losing the precise handling characteristics that their shallower wheelsets boast. One thing that helps the responsiveness for sure is that PCW manages to keep these wheels extremely light for the depth.
Customizable Hubs for Optimal Performance of the Princeton CarbonWorks Mach 7580 wheeslet
There are multiple setups available where you can choose various hub combos, but even the heaviest arrangement with White Industry hubs weighs in at a very respectable 1585g while the lightest with Carbon Ti hubs keeps them well below 1500 grams at 1477g. Tune hubs come in as the middle child at 1490g. Not too shabby considering these are not really meant for road racing but TTs and triathlons, where some deep dish wheels nudge the 2 kilo mark sometimes.
The Princeton CarbonWorks Mach 7580 are clincher/tubeless ready. Since they do not drill the spoke beds, you won't need rim tape, while the hooked bead will give you added confidence that the tires will set securely. Optimized for 25mm tires, these are wheels designed to go fast and win races.
