Knolly Tyaughton Steel: Embracing the Pure Joy of Hardtail Riding
As much as we love rocking the trails on our full suspension shredders, there is something so pure and classic feeling when riding a hardtail. And when the hardtail is made with super high quality steel like the Knolly Tyaughton Steel 29 inch, you know you will be enjoying some backcountry nirvana.
Based in British Columbia, Canada, Knolly likes to make bikes that reflect the type of riding that they are lucky enough to have on their doorstep. Avoiding trends, they tend in fact to be the trend-setters with an adventurous streak. You can see that in the Tyaughton Steel. Though most companies that offer steel bikes do so at the lower range of not only price but quality, Knolly has lavished a ton of advanced construction methods and feature details that make the Tyaughton Steel exceptional for any material. Made from air hardened steel, the tubes used for the frame have been size-specific butted, bent, and formed to suit each size and each rider individually.
What is air hardened steel, you may ask. It’s a class of steel that actually contains a small amount of carbon and is valued for its hardness, abrasion resistance, and the ability to hold its shape at high temperatures. The experts at Knolly heat treat the tubes to enhance its strength and durability, while also applying an anti-corrosion coating to ensure you won’t have to head home once the rain starts pounding. The seatstays and chainstays then meet at a nicely welded junction that are then coupled with custom CNC machined dropouts.
As far as the ride qualities go, the Tyaughton Steel has been designed to be an aggressive trail hardtail that will continually encourage you to test your skills. The geometry is progressive enough to feel natural even to someone who spends a lot of time bombing the descents on a full-on enduro monster. That means the 64.5° head angle with the spec’d 150mm fork rocks both on steep climbs and super steep descents. Knolly says that the Tyaughton can also be loads of fun with a 160mm fork which pushes the head angle back to 64°. In any case, the long front of the bike gives you room to move in the cockpit, while the 427mm chainstays ensure a peppy backend that makes it easy to maneuver without sacrificing stability. The 75° seat tube puts you in an aggressive position that will enhance how well the bike climbs. And if you are just coming off a full suspension trail bike, climbing with the Knolly Tyaughton hardtail will be revelatory thanks to the weight savings and the responsiveness you will experience with each pedal stroke.
Technical Excellence of the Knolly Tyaughton Steel
The Knolly Tyaughton Steel hardtail for 29 inch wheels features the 157Trail rear hub spacing which uses the wide flange 157 hubs with 73mm BB shells. This allows you to run a wide range of tire sizes up to and sometimes even greater than 2.6 inch. This particular spacing standard also allows for a 36 tooth front chainring. The integrated ISCG05 chain guide tabs have been carried over from the titanium version of this frame and are removable. Available in four sizes and two color schemes, the Knolly Tyaughton Steel is ready to rumble when and where you are.
