Moots Express: Redefining Gravel Riding with Carbon Innovation
The folks over at Moots have never been afraid to go against the grain, one reason why they have doggedly stuck with titanium production in the face of a sea of carbon made bikes. But now they have done two bold things: one, made an e-gravel bike and two, they have made it out of carbon. The Moots Express is the Steamboat Springs company’s solution for people who want to ride gravel hard and long, and don’t mind having a little motorized help when doing so.
Designed completely in Colorado, Moots then turned to two long term partners based out of China and Taiwan to execute the actual laying up and molding of the carbon frame. These partners have been producing other Moots branded components for over a decade, so they have a lot of mutual trust. As much as the whole reshoring movement for carbon manufacturing to the states is a noble goal, there’s no denying that most of the best experts and producers are still based in Asia. Just ask Pinarello, Colnago, Chapter 2, etc.
Are you wondering why they didn’t try to make the Express with titanium? The answer is, they did. They looked deeply and extensively into the possibilities, but found that so much titanium would need to be used on the frame to make it safe to ride, that the actual Ti ride quality would be totally lost. As it is now, with their expert carbon use and layup, the Moots Express wheelset can offer that ideal mix of supple and stiff for all your trail adventures. As a class 3 pedal assist e-bike, the Moots Express uses the Shimano EP801 drive unit which can get you going up to 28 mph (45 km/h). The 504Wh Shimano battery charges quickly and will be serviceable for many years to come thanks to their ubiquity. The battery is removable and there is a charging port in the frame.
Versatility in Design of the Moots Express Wheelset
The drivetrain is provided by Shimano XT Linkglide components, specifically built for e-bikes and designed to offer the gear range needed for gravel riding. Similarly, the Shimano GRX wheels offer a width that can accommodate nice and wide tires. The frame can even take a monster wheel/tire combo like 29-inch wheels with 2.1-inch tires. Fender mounts for the front and rear ensure this is a four-season ride, while each fork leg has three pack mounts.
The Moots Express comes in four sizes and all sizes have two water bottle mounts. With a 100 mile range weighing 33 pounds, this is a gravel e-bike that can enhance any adventure and means you can enjoy the climbs on the way home instead of dreading them.
